What the one-question answer leaves out
The cheapest server is not always the cheapest option.
A low server bill can hide maintenance time, failed updates, and restore work. “Managed” may cover the operating system but not n8n. Use the detailed calculator below when those costs or responsibilities could change your answer.
Lowest infrastructure ownership
n8n Cloud
Best when published limits fit and your team should spend time on workflows, not servers.
- No root-level control
- Execution and concurrency limits
- Application infrastructure handled by n8n
The contract-dependent middle
Managed hosting
Potentially useful when you need help, but “managed” must be unpacked line by line.
- n8n support may be excluded
- Root access may be restricted
- Restore evidence must be requested
Maximum control and ownership
Self-managed VPS
Best when you require root, custom packages, or data control—and can operate the stack.
- You patch and monitor
- You prove backups restore
- You size from real workload tests

Need a closer answer?
Compare workload, control, cash cost, and operator time. The result stays provisional until the load and recovery tests pass.
Responsibility matrix
“Managed” is not a complete answer.
Ask who performs each task, how often, and what evidence you receive. The highlighted column follows your current route.
| Operating task | n8n Cloud | Managed host | Self-managed VPS |
|---|
The contract question
“Will you update and recover the n8n application and its database, or only maintain the server OS and control panel?”
If the answer is vague, price the missing work as your responsibility.
Proof before purchase
Do not buy RAM from a blog post.
Execution count is not a memory benchmark. Files, browser automation, code, AI payloads, item counts, and concurrency change the load. Test the workflow that can actually hurt you.

n8n plans and limits
Starter €20/month annually, 2.5K executions and 5 concurrent; Pro €50/month annually, 10K and 20 concurrent.
Official pricing ↗Cloud configuration boundaries
n8n documents that custom ports, TLS, database, queue mode, and worker settings are not configurable on standard Cloud plans.
Official Cloud FAQ ↗Self-host security audit
The official audit checks credentials, database expressions, filesystem access, risky nodes, webhooks, and instance settings.
Official n8n docs ↗Managed vs unmanaged duties
Hosting.com’s current comparison assigns OS patches and monitoring differently and gives full root access only on unmanaged VPS.

Decision FAQ
What buyers usually discover too late
Is self-hosted n8n free?
The Community edition can remove a Cloud subscription, but the server, backup, monitoring, setup, maintenance, incident response, and your labor are not free. Some governance features require paid self-hosted plans.
How much RAM does n8n need?
There is no responsible universal number for every workflow. Load-test your heaviest payload at expected concurrency and record memory, queue time, and failures. Add headroom only after measuring that case.
Does managed VPS mean the provider manages n8n?
Not necessarily. Some contracts cover the OS and control panel but exclude Docker, n8n updates, database recovery, or application debugging. Ask for the scope in writing.
Why can the cheapest route lose?
The model compares annual cash and labor separately. A low server bill can lose once recurring admin time, setup, backup, monitoring, and recovery ownership are included.
