n8n hosting total cost

Cloud or self-hosted—after operator time?

Compare the n8n Cloud subscription with VPS, backup, monitoring, setup, updates, and incident recovery over the same number of months.

Your operating assumptions

Use a loaded hourly cost: wage or owner value plus employment overhead where relevant.

Editable planning rate; not live FX.

How to read the result

The lowest total is not automatically the right deployment.

Self-hosting can be the lower cash-cost option and still be the higher total-cost option when skilled operator time is scarce. Cloud can cost more and still be justified by administration, recovery, collaboration, support, or governance features. This calculator prices the workload you enter; it does not score those features.

n8n Cloud vs self-hosted: the decision in one table

Operating situationStart by modelingWhy
No server operator, workload fits a public Cloud tiern8n CloudThe subscription replaces most infrastructure, update, backup, and incident ownership. Keep account administration in the model.
Existing monitored infrastructure and tested backupsSelf-hosted marginal costDo not charge the full shared platform twice, but include the extra storage, monitoring, recovery, and operator time caused by n8n.
New VPS used only for n8nFull self-hosted costInclude setup, backup, monitoring, maintenance, incidents, and the server. A low VPS sticker price is not the total.

What “best n8n hosting” means here

There is no universal best provider in this calculator. The useful choice is the operating model that meets your measured workload and the controls your team actually needs. A managed service can win even with a higher invoice when no one can reliably patch and recover a server. An unmanaged VPS can win when that operating capability already exists.

Do not guess VPS requirements from price

Execution count alone does not determine CPU or memory. Workflow duration, concurrency, payload size, binary data, database use, queue mode, and external services can change capacity. Use the VPS field for a candidate price, then load-test that candidate and rehearse a restore before treating it as production-ready.

What is included

The Cloud side includes the annual-plan monthly-equivalent subscription and entered administration time. The self-hosted side includes VPS, backup, monitoring, one-time setup, monthly maintenance, expected incident time, and a zero-dollar Community Edition software license.

What the current n8n plans mean

The public Starter plan is €20 per month billed annually for 2,500 workflow executions, and Pro is €50 for 10,000. n8n states that a workflow execution is the metered unit regardless of workflow complexity. The paid self-hosted Business plan is not modeled as a Cloud upgrade; use a separate quote or custom cost when governance features are required.

What is not included

Tax, currency movement, Cloud overages, paid Business or Enterprise licenses, external APIs, AI model usage, data transfer, implementation services, security incidents beyond entered time, lost revenue, and feature differences are excluded.

Questions to answer before choosing a host

  • How many executions, concurrent runs, and long-running workflows do you measure?
  • Who owns updates, database backups, restore tests, TLS, monitoring, and incident response?
  • What is that person's loaded hourly cost and realistic monthly time?
  • Which governance or support features are non-negotiable?
  • What measured load test and recovery test will make the decision final?
